I guess my Christmas postings haven't been very positive, but this one hit me really hard. This morning, Breitbach's a restaurant north of Dubuque (in Balltown, IA) burned to the ground following an explosion. News reports indicate that nobody was hurt, but this landmark is gone.
The restaurant and bar have been part of the Balltown community since the 1800's. It is an institution that you expect from Iowa. Fresh, down-home, country food at economical prices.
We used to go up to Balltown a couple of times a year when I was in college in Dubuque from 1998-2002. It was the oldest bar and restaurant in the state, and a real institution in northeast Iowa.
It will be missed.
