A Travel First...

Friday is a huge day for me. It will my very first flying experience on Southwest. Yes, I have flown thousands of miles over the last decade, but never on Southwest. I haven't been avoiding the airline, it was never an option. My home airport used the be Des Moines, and it is not a Southwest city. But since my move to Oklahoma, I am firmly in Southwest territory. In my 11 months here I haven't seen a flight price that makes it logical for me to fly on the famous airline, until this weekend

We are going to San Diego to a wedding of a childhood friend. I scored $180.00 roundtrip fares and looking forward to the trip. I heart San Diego.

Keep it classy San Diego!

It Is a DREAM!!!!

I am head over heels right now. Airtran is making me SO HAPPY! My nearest city Des Moines has been plagued by above average airfares for the past year. In fact at one time they were the 5th highest in the country. Well, today AirTran announced they would begin service between Des Moines and Milwaukee to go against Midwest Airlines. I am so hoping that airfares will go down and maybe Airtran will add service to places like Atlanta???

Clever Marketing???

I get to see the Wicked Camper vans very day. I saw them in Taupo, I see them on the road, and even this morning I walked past one on my way to Te Papa. The same company has a site in Australia and are using clever marketing to get people to rent their vans. Show up nude, and you get a free day rental.

So far, hundreds of people have walked into the offices fully clad, gassed up a cheap van, and had their picture taken for the wall of naked backpackers.

Wicked campers are usually known for their spray painted, and sometimes racy vans, but this story is gaining a lot of attention around the world.

On their website there are 55 pictures of people showing up in the clad, don't worry their bits and pieces are covered on the website.

Most people know I would totally do this. So wicked.

Ticks On A Plane

Ticks decided to 'attack' a plane on it way from Denver to Des Moines the other night. Its an interesting story...

DES MOINES (AP) — Some wayward ticks delayed a United Airlines flight from Denver to Des Moines.

Flight 1178 was delayed for nearly six hours on Tuesday after a passenger informed a flight attendant that she found a tick in economy class during a flight from Washington, D.C., to Denver.

The airline decided it couldn't fly the plane until it was cleaned of ticks, so passengers had to wait while another plane was flown from Colorado Springs to Denver. The flight was further delayed because of thunderstorms in the Denver area.

United spokeswoman Robin Urbanski said between one and three ticks were discovered. Urbanski said the airline hasn't figured out how the ticks got on the plane or what type of ticks were found.

"I don't know if we'll be able to find that out," Urbanski said. "When possible, we do try to look into those type of things, and hopefully try to look for its origin."

The replacement plane shuttled the 107 passengers to Des Moines.

The plane with ticks had begun its day in Chicago. It was cleaned of ticks, checked and put back into service.

No ticks were found on passengers.

Ticks can pass along a number of illnesses to humans, including Lyme disease.

Great Travel Stories...Random Thoughts...

Well most of the major airlines have now announced their impending fleet reductions. Northwest announced today. I am booked a business trip to Memphis yesterday for a trip in July. The roundtrip direct, airfare was somewhere around $769.00. I understand price hikes, but you can still do cross country flying for $288.00 roundtrip in Virgin America (or so it said yesterday). I still can't figure out why we aren't charged per mile flown?

Carry-On Crackdown
There is nothing more exciting than to see news everywhere that airlines and TSA are FINALLY going to crack down on carry-on baggage. People have been getting away with bringing far too much stuff on far too full planes. This crackdown should have happened years ago. I still haven't figured out why people need so much crap. I lived in Australia for months and only had a backpack and a small daypack.

Elite Flyers Ruining Travel?
This article had me doing some thinking. I think elite travelers are runing travel. They use their airline egos to act and speak more intelligently than what they really are (I am guilty). They think rules don't apply to them (I have seen this happen). They can be a pain in the butt. What do you think?

Why I Like United...

I don't hide the fact that I prefer United Airlines. They have most of my frequent flier miles. I have Premier Executive status. I love Economy Plus. And I also love the fact that on mainline flights you can listen to the pilots and air traffic controllers on Channel 9. Well it sounds like that may soon come to an end.

I remember being able to listen on delays for wheels up time before it is announced to the cabin. How there might be some upcoming turbulence. And even a few crazy air traffic controllers (in a good way).

There have been fewer and fewer flights where the pilots have turned on Channel 9. And many believe that this trend will continue until the service is no longer available. Pilots are worried about people 'judging' there performance. I don't see a problem with this. Most places you work have some sort of customer performance metric to judge raises, promotions, and such. Why not for a pilot and flight attendants. It would make them better, the airline better, and customers much happier.

I fly United tomorrow. I hope Channel 9 will be turned on.

Adventures...

I love having a bit of adventure on my travels. It could be spelunking in caves, diving the Great Barrier Reef, or jumping from the highest bungy spot in the world...The 2008 trends have been published, and they look great!

Trends in adventure travel

By Megan K. Scott, Associated Press Writer
NEW YORK — Forget the tan, the Mickey Mouse photos and the cliche souvenirs.

These days, travelers want to experience something more than the gated resort and the cruise ship buffet. They want to go on a walking tour, climb a mountain and kayak down a river — adventures that can make a vacation more meaningful.

"In travel, people are increasingly seeking the authentic unique experiences that stretch the imagination and create potent memories that last a lifetime," says Chris Doyle, vice president of the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA). According to the organization, adventure travel is the fastest growing segment of the leisure travel industry.

Of course, adventure is in the eye of the traveler, and ranges from a walking tour to whitewater rafting. But because of that, it remains relatively unaffected by the weak dollar and economic downturn, says David Larkin, managing director of AdventureUs.com, a social networking and directory for adventure travelers.

Here, according to the experts, are some of the latest trends in adventure travel.

GIRLFRIEND GETAWAYS: More women are leaving the men at home. More than 50% of adventure travelers are women and most fall between ages 41 and 60, according to a 2006 survey by the ATTA. "We used to think of active holidays for 20-somethings," says Evelyn Hannon, creator of journeywoman.com, an online travel resource for women. "Now it's not unheard of for 50- and 60-year-olds to be going kayaking, mountain climbing, surfing."

VOLUNTEER VACATIONS: Combining volunteerism with vacation continues to be a growing trend; Global Volunteers saw a 30% increase in participation last year, according to co-founder Michele Gran. Baby boomers still rule, she says, but the fastest growing demographic in the last 18 months has been people under age 20, more than likely baby boomers who bring their children with them.

EXPEDITIONARY TRAVEL: More people are helping researchers through the Earthwatch Institute, an international volunteer organization supporting science. Expeditions include surveying coral reefs on a remote Bahamian island or feeding and caring for cheetahs in Namibia. Most of the trips are two weeks, and no special training is required. (Exceptions may be trips that require scuba-diving certification or a high fitness level). Other examples include conservation-minded tours to watch giant sea turtles lay their eggs in coastal areas of the southeastern U.S., Mexico and Costa Rica.

CHARITY TRAVEL: Think an extreme version of a walkathon. Venture Expeditions, a Christian-based organization, sponsors trips to raise awareness and funds for various organizations, such as biking through Thailand to raise money for an orphanage. Travelers pay for the trip and then make a minimum donation to the charity.

ACTION-PACKED VACATIONS: Some people call action-packed vacations The Bucket List for the movie starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, two terminally ill patients who want to complete a list of things to do before they kick the bucket. Ultimate 5 Lifetime Adventures packs five of what it calls the world's greatest adventures into one week: a military-developed Ropes Challenge Course, skydiving, Indy car racing, rappelling and piloting a primary combat trainer aircraft.

FAMILY ADVENTURE VACATIONS: Some families (including multigenerational) are forgoing theme parks and all-inclusive resorts for "more genuine nature-based, cultural, and education and learning excursions," says Doyle. He attributes this in part to baby boomers who have the means to travel "coupled with a strong interest in bonding more deeply with families." GordonsGuide.com, a website on adventure and active travel, says the top vacation requests are all family friendly — dude and guest ranches, houseboat rentals, whitewater rafting and horse pack trips and trail rides.

SOFT ADVENTURE VACATIONS: An increasing number of people are choosing a vacation that centers around a theme, such as a culinary tour in Asia or wine vacation in Israel. Yoga has also seeped into the mix. Best of Both Women's Adventures has yoga on all of its trips and a specific yoga and surf vacation in Puerto Rico. (Surfing is one of the top activities that women want to do, says Dez Bartelt, co-founder of Best of Both Women's Adventures.) Other combinations include yoga and snowboarding or yoga and wine tasting.

EXPEDITION CRUISING: Look for more people to take expedition cruises to Antarctica, the Galapagos and Alaska, says Carolyn Spencer Brown, editor-in-chief of CruiseCritic.com, three places that are hard to see without sailing there. The cruises, while less glitzy than big ship cruise lines, include lectures and presentations about the place. "On an expedition cruise, everything revolves really around what you see off the ship," says Brown. "On the big ship cruises, everything revolves around what happens on board and the ports are sort of an addendum."

ROOTS VACATIONS: With an increasing number of people swabbing their cheek to find their roots, some are taking it a step further and traveling to the places where their ancestors lived. Discover Natural Ancestry (amazingdna.com) not only provides DNA analysis and genealogy services, it puts people in touch with tour operators who plan the trip for them. "If they are breathing, then they have a genetic story hidden within them and we help them to discover and explore the unknown secrets about their heritage," says Yvonne Walker, marketing director for Discover Natural Ancestry.

AFRICAN TRAVEL: While the Kenya Tourist Board says the sporadic and isolated violence has calmed and tourists were never in danger (the situation was internal and occurred in places where tourists generally don't go), there has been a downturn in tourism in Kenya and some spillover to other countries in East Africa, says Wil Smith, director of Deeper Africa, a tour operator with trips to Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

"I believe the bounce back in the neighboring countries is going to be swift," he says. "I think it's probably going to take best scenario, six months for Kenya to recover."

When the region recovers, look for more people to go gorilla tracking in Uganda and Rwanda; visit Ethiopia, an emerging destination, and climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, before the snow on its peak, which has been gradually receding, disappears.

Travel News...

United Will Charge for More Bags
United Airlines announced today it is taking steps to charge some customers $25.00 for more than one checked bag. While this is just something for the bottom line I hope that people will take less 'crap' on vacation and will create more fuel efficiency - which I really enjoy. What do you think?

Ethiopia On Sale
Ethiopia is on sale. There are some fantastic deals from Washington Dulles to Ethiopia and Africa. It is a place I really want to visit, and is off the beaten path.

Off the Path
I love places that are off the path. Budget Travel has put together some great places that you have never heard of. This article highlights a spot that was found in Oregon. It is such a great series, so check it out.

Travel News for the Week...

Mergers Good for Customers?
The airline industry is trying its best to consolidate. While they will reduce costs, increase shareholder value, and make the companies operate more efficiently it will also cause huge increases (in already increasing) travel costs. We will see what happens.

Stingy Airlines

Trying to get some kind of refund for messed up travel is almost impossible. But there are ways to fix the issue and this columnist can help you out. Hmmm, I might need to contact him.

Get Off the Plane!
When there aren't enough flight attendants it is a good idea to get off the plane. I have scored several vouchers that have helped with later travel. Well Pacific Blue was down a flight attendant and needed to off-load a few people, but that turned out to be very hairy.

AAAHHHH....A Spa

New Zealand has some great spa opportunities, and we here in North America need it. Today the day started at 45F and is now 8F and falling further. I really need to jump into a hot pool of spa water.

Travel News for the Week...

Here are some http://www.blogger.com/img/gl.link.gifinteresting travel tidbits...

Canada Considers Alternative to Passports

Canada is going to test drive a new system to bypass passports. The new high tech drivers license could be an alternative to passports to cross the border by sea and land. British Columbia will be the test site for the project to ease future border concerns when everyone will need a passport to cross the border.

Online During a Flight?

American Airlines is rolling out its new high speed internet system during transcontinental flights on its Boeing 767. There is a catch, it should help the bottom line with another fee charged. And what about not offending the people sitting next to you? Hmmmm?

Stranded on a Mountain in Africa?
500 tourists were stranded on Table Mountain in Africa. There were people on the mountain in even in cable cars. SCARY! The reason for being stranded, the electricity was cut. They are having issues with infrastructure in Africa, BE CAREFUL!

Bill of Rights?

Passengers and in come cases governments have been demanding a bill of rights to protect customers when flying around the world. This is in huge response to the February issues with the airlines in the northeast. Hopefully the market will drive this, but maybe the government should step in.

DC-9's Are Gone

FINALLY!!! Northwest Airlines is going to speed up the retirement of the DC-9. These were great aircraft a few years ago, but are really outdated. They are replacing the DC-9 with the CRJ-900 and ERJ-175 that hold 76 passengers. There is also talk of another 100 passenger type aircraft entering the fleet, if they don't merge in the coming weeks.

Weekend Travel News...

Here are a few things I have picked up during my research this week...A bit of good, travel news...

Snakes on a Plane, For Real?
A Thai Airways flight from Vietnam had a snakes in the cargo hold, scary.

Updated Air Traffic Control Standards
The Air Traffic Control System in the US dates back to the 1950's. There have been lots of discussions about an upgrade of the system. And this might make things better.

Money Never Ending? Try Heliskiing...
If you have some cash and want to spend it, there is a fairly new adventure sport called heli-skiing. It looks fantastic!

Wanna Dangerous Trip? Haiti, Democratic Republic of Congo, Somolia?
I want to go to places like Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan someday, but right now NO WAY. I would rather risk going to other countries that are somewhat stable. But this article explains the risks.

Money Saving Family Vacations
You can take a trip and save some money. There are several suggestions in this article but the last one about air-conditioner making you save gas $$$ might be wrong, it takes extra fuel and efficiency to run the thing, at least according to my grandfather who was a mechanic for 50 years.

Travel News...

Here are a few travel news stories I have picked up this week...

Are you watching porn????
Airlines and passengers are worried that new rules with cell phones and internet use in airplanes will create distractions in a quite zone.

Are you a travel heavyweight?
There is a website where travelers are trying to visit all parts of the globe, and a few are almost there. I might have more on this in the next couple of weeks.

Most Traveled People

Mother Nature???

Do airlines use "Act of God" as a reason for flight delays too much? Do they need more oversight?

Blame it on Mother Nature
